Let's Party! Meerkats #2

I'm still a relative youngster in blogland compared to some of you but yesterday was my blog's 3rd anniversary!  I'm celebrating with an interactive make made for my OH's birthday - a gatefold shutter card using more of the meerkat stamps from my new Hobby Art set.  My first meerkat card you can see here.


I came across shutter opening style cards on Pinterest and found a template I could understand and make work for me here.  Made a mock up of one first to see how it all fitted together then decided to go bigger ending up with a 6"x 6" card.  I've listed my measurements just in case I put them somewhere very safe never to be found again!

Chocolate brown card base pieces -
12" x 6" - scored at 3" & 9" to create a gatefold.
9" x 4" strip - scored at 1cm on each short side - place a square die in the middle like a diamond & die cut to end up with two fishtail banner shapes for the shutter mechanism.
6" x 4" strip with a circle die cut from the middle.



This style of card can be decorated in so many different ways maybe with panels of patterned papers or die cuts.

I decided to use stamps on the front panels with trees and grasses surrounding the three die cut circles, fussy cut meerkats on the look out for their party guest coloured with promarkers and two circle sentiment die cut toppers overlapping the centre opening.

I've seen some examples that have just one large central topper and others with a belly band to slide off to hold the card together - so many choices.




Inside are two die cut striplet panels partly inked with DO. 

Behind the shutter reveal I've added a larger fussy cut meerkat and three balloons floating away with orange accents to brighten the overall brown and cream base colours.

CAS Christmas Challenge - Guest Designer Card

Excited to be sharing my guest designer card for September's  CAS Christmas  card challenge where this month's theme is Christmas Tree.  I was their winning card in July, you can see it  here . I reached for my all time favourite Christmas tree stamp from an enchanted Christmas set by Hot off the Press.  A solid stamp with a lovely flourish design and snowflakes as part of the tree itself.  First I heat embossed the tree with white EP then positioned a circle stencil partly over so I could dab using cling film some pearl effects before sponging with distress inks to create a snowy sky backdrop.  Both the tree and pearl effects act as a resist and buff up to a lovely shine. I've ended up with a contemporary colour palette with an emphasis on lighter shades of purple with touches of blue and turquoise as the three DIs were still out on my desk from a previous project so I just went with them.  Finishing touches are three stamped and embossed snowflakes with coloured dot centr

I Spy With My Little Eye ... Guest Designer

So lovely to be invited by Ellie from Simply Ellibelle's blog as guest designer for challenge 14 of " I spy with my little eye.... something with wings " selected by Pauline.  A fabulous theme with so many possibilities ... I chose to ink up this wonderful large scale owl with draft lines and geometric styling and created a spotlight die-cutting technique. Owl stamped and heat embossed with clear EP then die cut part of the image into a circle.  To make the background, two different distress inks (one green, one blue) were smooched onto the remaining panel.  I did some light stencilling in areas, blue ink for the hex matrix pattern, white ink for the circles with iridescent mica pigment powder so they catch the light.  Finally some over stamping in smoke blue ink (which looks more light grey) for the doodle patterns and additional words (spread your wings, soar, fly).  Die cut circle has another layer underneath so it's slightly raised and left uncoloured.  Die cut &a

Let it Snow

Crafting has been a bit hit and miss for me of late as family life has just got in the way but at last a Christmas card made for two challenges, a late entry for  September's CAS Mix Up  and a new colour challenge that has caught my interest called  Color Hues . I masked off a panel on the front of my card base and blended a mix of blue inks to create an ombre effect from turquoise to navy with a few splatters of water to add interest and lift some of the ink.  I've not embossed with dies very much so had to hunt where I had written down the sandwich for my Big Shot!  I'd forgotten how little pressure was needed to get a lovely embossed impression.  I chose a few snowflake dies and positioned them partly on/off my inked panel to widen the overall design then stamped the gorgeous sentiment at the bottom (I do love this flowing font) and a few falling little snowflakes all in navy blue.
