Spread Your Wings

A venture into mixed media with texture paste - my background originally looked a mess, so I thought, and was destined for the bin but I persevered.  Now I've lived with the finished card for a few days I have grown to like it mainly because I've covered up some bad areas with the frame/die cuts and the bright accent colour really pops!

Reminds me of Spring - green leaves appearing on the trees, golden sunshine and birds busy building their nests.

I didn't take any photos during my messy background process but started with a white piece of ordinary cardstock and in this order -
  • randomly stuck down strips/left over die cut patterned paper
  • ran through my Big Shot with a birthday words stencil for an embedded embossed look
  • sponged all over with cracked pistachio DO
  • brushed over with watered down gesso
  • sponged on evergreen bough DO and crushed olive DI
  • added texture paste through a dotty circles stencil, heat embossed with gold EP
The texture paste dried so quickly not many areas ended up with gold embossing.  At this point I was ready to throw in the towel as some areas looked like a bird had flown by and pooped on it!

A close up of the background

A fresh look later I decided to mount a white doodle frame over the top popping back in most of the cut outs to hide the worst bits.  The orange/yellow solid die cuts compliment the duck egg green background and also gives somewhere for your eyes to focus.  Sentiment heat embossed in gold on vellum.  Think it might be a while before I attempt something like this again!
I've used - 6x6" white card base
Funky Fossil dies - Doodle Frame & Bird set, Rain or Shine set
Funky Fossil Kaleidescope designer papers
Funky Fossil stencils - Birthday Words, Dotty Circles
Sentiment from Funky Fossil Geo Bugs stamp set

  2. This is certainly a very mixed media background, worth persevering with it as the end design is lovely, the orange really makes it. I love the effect of the paper strips in the background, most of my backgrounds have areas i don't like so they get chopped up or the bad part hidden. Emmax
